In keeping with ACS standards, the NSQIP's mission is to help hospitals improve health care by maintaining a working knowledge of the industry's shifting needs and demands. The NSQIP's primary goal is to implement improvements in surgical procedures to more effectively prevent complications, save lives, and cut costs related to preventable surgical complications, many of which insurance providers refuse to cover.
Hospitals can choose from several options that meet their size and specialties, as well as specific improvements areas. When a hospital selects a program option, a surgical clinical reviewer is hired to collect necessary data and to appoint a Surgeon Champion for leading the hospital's quality improvements. Further details about the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program and other ACS programs are available at www.facs.org.
