Dr. Franklin Epstein
Raised in New York, neurologist and neurosurgeon Dr. Franklin Epstein attended Bronx High School of Science, from which he graduated with honors. In 1969, Dr. Franklin Epstein completed his Bachelor of Science in Physics and wrote his honors thesis under the direction of Nobel Laureate S. E. Luria.
In 1973, Dr. Franklin Epstein received his Doctor of Medicine from New York University School of Medicine. The valedictorian of his graduating class, Dr. Franklin Epstein also received the Glover C. Arnold and James E. Tower Awards for surgical excellence, the AOA and Solomon Shapiro Awards for his high scholastic rank, the Frederick C. Holden Award for obstetrics and gynecology, and the University Founders Day Award.
Dr. Franklin Epstein then began a three-year residency and internship at Harvard Medical School’s Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, during which time he received the Radiology Annual Award. Dr. Franklin Epstein next completed a three-year residency in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1982, Dr. Franklin Epstein became Chief Resident in Neurology at Massachusetts General.
An additional four-year post as a resident in neurosurgery followed for Dr. Franklin Epstein. In 1986, Dr. Franklin Epstein completed his training as Chief Resident in Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, then immediately assumed a post as an Instructor in the Department of Neurosurgery.
Beginning in 1987, Dr. Franklin Epstein founded a group practice in neurosurgery and neurology, the Southern Neurologic Institute in South Carolina. Dr. Franklin Epstein remained at Southern Neurologic Institute until 2003, when he moved to Texas and returned to teaching full-time.
Dr. Franklin Epstein is currently the Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at Audie L. Murphy Memorial Hospital, affiliated with the Department of Neurological Science at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
