A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and New York University School of Medicine, Franklin Epstein, M.D., spent the next 13 years following his education completing residencies in internal medicine, neurology, and neurosurgery. Since 2003, Dr. Franklin Epstein has held the position of chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans’ Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.
Called “the most decorated American soldier of World War II”, Audie Murphy was awarded every medal available for valorous combat service. Born in 1925 to sharecropper parents in Texas, Murphy enlisted in the Army in June of 1942; according to many accounts, he falsified his age to do so. From the time he first saw action in July 1943 until the end of the war, Murphy distinguished himself with numerous acts of courage, often putting his own life in jeopardy to protect his comrades. He was rapidly promoted through the enlisted ranks, and was made a second lieutenant in October of 1944 via a battlefield commission.
In addition to his American military decorations, Murphy was awarded five medals by France and one by Belgium. He became a popular actor and songwriter after the war, but died in 1971 in a plane crash at the age of 45. The Veterans Administration hospital planned for San Antonio was named for him, and the hospital was dedicated in late 1973.
